MMA PR Done Right

Sorry for the lag in blog updates; I've been somewhat busy and sick. I had an interview last week. I also am being destroyed by my allergies - come on NJ, I need some rain!

MMA has yet another issue regarding post-fight shenanigans. Luckily, this wasn't seen on national TV and the UFC handled the situation promptly and efficiently.

During the UFC 113 card this past Saturday, Paul Daley and Josh Koscheck fought in one of the main event fights. Daley and Koscheck were trash-talking all the way up until the fight, so there was some tension. After a unanimous decision by Koscheck (the fight ultimately frustrated Daley), Daley swung and punched Koscheck well after the bell (at least 10 seconds after).

This is inexcusable.

Some of you may remember a few weeks ago, I, and many other blogs, posted about the Strikeforce Brawl. And how Dana White (president of the UFC) was the person commenting about the UFC's rival's PR gaffe.

This time around, White's promotion was on the line. He handled it perfectly. White promptly responded and Daley has been suspended/kicked out of the UFC.

Taken from Maggie Hendricks' article from CageWriter (CLICK HERE FOR THE ENTIRE ARTICLE):

"He's done. I don't give a [expletive] if he's the best 170-pounder in the world, he'll never come back here again," White said in the postfight press conference.
"He'll never come back. I'm probably the most lenient guy in sports and this is probably one of the most lenient organizations. You know we're all human, we all make mistakes, things happen. There's no excuse for that. These guys are professional athletes. You don't ever hit a guy blatantly after the bell like that whether you're frustrated or not."

I'm not going to lie, it's another black eye (pun totally intended) for the sport, but luckily, White stepped in and handled the situation quickly - like Strikeforce should have in their issue.

So sports promotions (NFL, NHL, MLB, etc. and so forth), pay attention. This is a good example of how disciplinary action in a timely manner can help your organization out.
